- Snow showers and south winds are keeping me home infront of the fire. The season ends this weekend for the majority of rivers so I'm hoping for one last break in the weather so I can hit that spawning run. Otherwise, I can just go out on the lake any time through the winter for some exciting fishing, especially when the conditions are right. The average taking lake fish is between 4 and 6lb (2-3kg). They are keen on whats called a streamer in NZ, nymphs or the odd dry right in the edges eg a green beetle immitation is good fun especially when you can see the fish coming for it.
- The mighty Clutha river which drains Lake Wanaka is open through the winter and this is an exceptional fishery. The options may be fewer this time of year but we'll never be stuck for somewhere to go.
